I think, rather than try to change the lingo of the times (which is rather communistic and controlling for so many reasons), the shorter path probably lies in people being aware of semantics and their potential fallacies. Homosexuality became negative before the name Gaylord was marred. Language is culture, and you cannot change language first. It ALWAYS follows culture.
I do really like the article though. And I was not aware of Guardian's Life & Style section! It has a lot of interesting pieces!
