It seems fitting today, on the day that we lose Steve Jobs, a man who bought excitement to the word ‘technology’, that I tell you what makes me so excited about tonight. As discussed in a previous post, I dont generally 'do' the theatre. The reason for tonights journey onto unchartered territory is that my book, ‘The First Time’ is being turned into a play. What really gets me going about this production, is that Chris Mellor, the producer, is utilizing technology to create a unique theatrical experience. In theory, it should go something like this...
The audience will be taken 'backstage' via camera during the show to learn more about the background to each of the charactors in my book. In between the actors monologues, the audience will also be invited to tweet in their stories, thoughts and reactions to #camden theatres. This material will be fed back into the show by the narrator. For the very brave, there will be the virginity chair, a place where audience members can come and tell their stories live. Next Thursday 'The Twespians' - tweeting thespians of course, what else, - will be joining the action.
I say, in theory, at the moment, Chris is pacing up and down the floor, no doubt wondering whether he has made a terrible mistake. What if it all goes horribly wrong? What if no one turns up? And if they do, will they bother tweeting about it? In the end, it doesn't really matter. The show is designed to deal with any eventuality but the point is that technology means that we can present a new and exciting show every single night, depending on how the audience reacts to the material.
The whole shebang is being streamed on the internet so don't feel left out if you don't live in The Smoke. You can stream the show live from the Camden Theatres website and tweet your reaction referencing the tag #camdentheatres. So...its almost lights down here in the inky blackness of the Tristan Bates Theatre. Chris is still pacing, the actors are warming up, sound is being checked and the social media expert is well, being a social media expert. Break a leg guys.
